Minerals and Mining: Beyond Treasure Hunting

Between 50,000 and 100,000 abandoned mine shafts in Arizona are testament to the rich mining history of our state. What minerals lured the prospectors here? Did their dreams of wealth become reality? From copper ore to gold to salt, Arizona’s mining industry continues to bolster our state’s economy. Investigate a few of the most important mineral resources that helped shape the history of our 48th state.

Best practices emphasis: Math literacy, Marzano’s strategies

By participating in this workshop, learners will:

  • Understand that Arizona's incredible geology and mineral wealth has greatly shaped the history, growth and economy of the state by comparing and contrasting Arizona mining in the past and in the 21st century.
  • Evaluate the necessity for mineral products in modern life by examining how environmental regulations and sustainability issues interface with society's needs and wants. 
  • Explore Marzano's 9 Strategies for Effective Teaching by engaging in unique hands-on activities.
  • Understand effective math literacy concepts by designing experiments, graphs and algorithms based on workshop content and activities.
