About Larry McBiles, Ph.D.
Dr. J. L. "Larry" McBiles is the Executive Director of the Arizona Foundation for Resource Education (AFRE). He has served in that position since the natural resources nonprofit organization was formed in 2001. AFRE is dedicated to environmental and economic literacy, as well as instructional excellence. It serves Arizona K-12 teachers and administrators.
He is a veteran educator and recognized authority on the critical issues relating to systemic and sustainable school improvement, instructional leadership, and performance-based assessment.
Dr. McBiles is a fourth-generation native Arizonan. He currently resides in a historical neighborhood of downtown Phoenix.
Professional Experience
Dr. McBiles has over 30 years of professional experience as an educator.
He began his educational career in 1976 as an elementary teacher in the Ajo (Ariz.) Unified School District. Subsequently, he taught at the middle and secondary level. He also served as an administrator at both the district and university level.
He was Deputy Associate Superintendent of the Arizona Department of Education, and Assistant Director of the Bureau of Educational Research and Services at the College of Education, Arizona State University.
Since 1992, Dr. McBiles has been an adjunct faculty member in the College of Education at Arizona State University. For seven years he taught graduate courses as an Adjunct Professor of Education at the Center for Excellence in Education at Northern Arizona University (Flagstaff).
During much of his career, Dr. McBiles has been active in promoting high-quality, statewide environmental education through a variety of organizations. He is the past president of the Arizona Association for Environmental Education.
Education
Dr. McBiles holds a Ph.D. degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Arizona State University.
